International Byron Society

Hello, I'm Hrileena, and I came to be interested in Byron in a rather roundabout fashion: through reading Tom Moore's Lalla-Rookh.

I found out that Moore had written Lalla-Rookh following Byron's advice, so I read the letter in which Byron tells Moore to "stick to the East". Then I read a few more, and then some of his poetry, and... three years down the line, here I am.

Let me welcome you with some verses from the "Curse of Minerva", you probably already know too well:

"Look to the East, where Ganges' swarthy race
Shall shake your tyrant empire to its base;
Lo! There Rebellion rears her ghastly head
And glares the Nemesis of native dead;
Till Indus rolls a deep purpureal flood
And claims his long arrear of northern blood.
So may ye perish! Pallas, when she gave
Your free-born rights, forbade ye to enslave".

Byron's thought ran at least 50 years ahead of "Ganges' swarthy race", if not a full century ahead.
