Sorry about the lost link on the previous attempt, this time it should work.

I'm new to Byron and writing a travel book re-creating his first Grand Tour. I would very much appreciate members' comments on Byron the man/poet/peer at the age of 21. The link to the chapter is:

http://byron-grand-tour.blogware.com/blog/_archives/2008/10/19/3937107.html

or if that still doesn't work the blog link off the website below, and then the Gibraltar to Sardinia chapter.

Many thanks in advance.

I commented also on your Byron Grand Tour blog, not sure which should be. I think you have captured him really well, and although there is no contrast given he was surely a different man at 21 then after 25 and beyond. A man in the making so to speak. My impression was that he was moodier than you portray, and even if Galt is catching up for his own ends that seems to be his (Galt’s) main beef about Byron. The quotes you give on his developing sexuality are very apt and sympathetic – which makes a nice change! When is the book due? Beverley

Thanks for this reply Beverley. The book is being written 'then and now' so it rather depends on progress on the high seas. I'm spending the winter in Malta as the Med is a bit rough and ready until about March, then heading for Greece, Albania and Turkey. My publisher in the US has just been taken over and all pending deals frozen, but that's another drama. You're not by any miracle a Literary Agent are you?

Hello Debora, thank you for asking, we are in Malta for the winter and hope to be heading off in Byron's wake as soon as the weather cheers up - which they say should be in March. First Byron stop will be Patras, then Preveso in Greece and then on through Albania overland to Tepelene. There's an updated website http://www.strathcarrons-ahoy.com and the new Byron blog and YouTube video links off that. Happy Christmas! Ian

Hello Violaine, I hope to be in Istanbul around June, but any timing involving wind and waves is best left to the gods. I'll let you know nearer the time, but not having swam the Hellespont! All best, Ian

The new section on Spain was very interesting, but didn't I read somewhere (Marchand?) that Admiral Cordova's daughter was a spy? Is the house in Jerez where Byron and Hobhouse 'quaffed at the fountainhead' open to the public with rest of Tio Pepe? Might go there this summer....
Beverley
ps did you read Byron in Love new by Edna O'Brien?

Thanks Beverley and there's also a YouTube of Byron in Gibraltar on the blog. I've had another look and can't see anything about her being a spy, but if you have the right source please pass it on. The house in Jerez is now in private hands, although part of the Gonzalez Byass family, but I can recommend a visit to the bodega.

Edna O'Brien on Byron in Love - no, not yet but I've read the reviews. Sounds like a contradiction to me - 'in love' in the sense that 'Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks / Within his bending sickle's compass come.' I don't think he did 'love'; passion - more or less permanently, one after another; romance - whenever he picked up a pen; lust - either way, but he didn't even love love his true self. Maybe Edna was using shorthand! And maybe the book needs a separate thread when you - or anyone else - has read it?
