Are there any memorial celebrations / commemorations for today (April 19th?)

The Newstead Abbey Byron Society usually has a service in Hucknall Church on the closest Sunday.

The last few years, the Municipality of Vyronas (a suburb of Athens who bears the hellenized name of the poet and inhabited by Greek refugees from Asia Minor in 1924) organises a memorial celebration with memorial prayer, reciting poems, folk dances etc.

The celebrations take place at St Lazarus square where a bust of Byron stands beside a marble slab which informs the visitor that Vyronas was "established on the centenary of Lord Byron's death to commemorate his devotion to the Greek refugees".

Also the Byron League, a small circle of intellectuals centered in Vyronas, organized a projection of a documental film concerning Byron's life. On February 29th Byron League had honoured the poet's maiden speech in the House of Lords calling Toni Simpson director of Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation, for a relevant lecture on Byron and the Luddites theme with certain parallels to the Greek crisis of today.

Bravo Andreas!
Thank you so much for posting these links.
I made similar comparisons a while ago....

Here's hoping that your post will not be taken down.

Thanks. And if you happen to be present in Beirut this summer, you'll be treated with some more!

Be lenient. The Hellespont Swim 2010 in favor of the Vets was silently sidesteped too. Enjoy the truce. Fill up your pipe of peace with some Highland Sliced! 8)

I don't smoke, Andreas!

Your links are still here... well done!

Good luck at Beirut, I wish I could be there, but unfortunately not.
